Anton Fisher
Anton "Tony" Fisher, who cooked hundreds of thousands of meals in his more than 25 years as chef at the Green Mill Inn, died Sunday at his Windsor home. He was 89.
Fisher and his brother Jules owned and operated the popular Penngrove eatery from 1947 to 1973.
In its heyday, the Green Mill was one of the most popular restaurants in the North Bay. It could seat 500 diners, and often served 1,500 or more meals on big holidays like Mother's Day. Its big green windmill signs along High-way 101 in Petaluma and Rohnert Park have been given historical landmark status.
A native of Nottwil, Switzerland, Tony Fisher learned to cook as a boy. He began his career as a chef in Montreux-Vevey, Switzerland, but immigrated to Canada as .a young man to cook in hotels owned by the Canadian Pacific Railroad, including the Banff Springs Hotel, the Chateau Lake Louise, the Palliser Hotel and the Empress Hotel in Victoria, B.C.
He came to Sonoma County to work with his brother in 1947. Jules Fisher worked the bar and the front of the restaurant while Tony ran the busy kitchen. They sold the place in 1966, but took it back when the new owners struggled, and continued operating it until 1973.
Fisher's first wife, Mary, died in 1967. He met his second wife, Illion, when she applied for a hostess job at the restaurant in 1970, and they married that year. The couple traveled extensively, visiting every continent and tour-ing the United States and Canada. They moved to Windsor from Penngrove three years ago.
Fisher had been ill with emphysema for almost a year when he died in his sleep on Sunday, Illion Fisher said.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Margaret Dalrymple of Reno and Allan. Fisher of Sonoma; his stepchil-dren, Bevy Donegan of Florida, Sharan Davis of Arizona and Steve Howe of Chico; his brother, Jules Fisher of Petaluma; two grandchil-dren; and five stepgrandchildren. Six brothers and sisters preceded him in death.
Friends may call after 10 a.m., today at Parent-Sorensen Mortu-ary in Petaluma. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the mortuary, followed by a private graveside service at Cypress Hill Memorial Park in Petaluma. Contributions may be made to Medshares-Spectrum Hospice, 2421 Mendocino Ave., Santa Rosa 95403.

Friends are invited to attend the Funeral Services, Thursday, February 18, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at the PARENT-SORENSEN MORTUARY, Magnolia Ave. & Keokuk St., Petaluma. Those who prefer may contribute to Medshares-Spectrum Hospice, :; 2421 Mendocino Ave., Santa Rosa, CA 95403 in memory of Tony Fisher. Friends may call at the Mortuary after 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Private Family Graveside Services, will be held at Cypress Hill Memorial Park, Petaluma, immediately following the funeral service.

Fisher und sein Bruder Jules führten das beliebte Restaurant in Penngrove von 1947 bis 1973.
In seiner Blütezeit war das Green Mill eines der beliebtesten Restaurants in der North Bay. Es bot Platz für 500 Gäste und servierte an Feiertagen wie dem Muttertag oft 1'500 oder mehr Mahlzeiten. Die grossen grünen Windmühlenschilder entlang des Highway 101 in Petaluma und Rohnert Park stehen unter Denkmalschutz.
Der aus Nottwil in der Schweiz stammende Tony Fisher lernte das Kochen bereits als Junge. Seine Karriere begann er als Koch in Montreux-Vevey in der Schweiz, wanderte aber als junger Mann nach Kanada aus, um in Hotels der Canadian Pacific Railroad zu kochen, darunter das Banff Springs Hotel, das Chateau Lake Louise, das Palliser Hotel und das Empress Hotel in Victoria, British Columbia.
Er kam 1947 nach Sonoma County, um mit seinem Bruder zusammenzuarbeiten. Jules Fisher arbeitete hinter der Bar und im Service, während Tony die Küche leitete. 1966 verkauften sie das Restaurant, nahmen es aber zurück, als die neuen Besitzer in Schwierigkeiten gerieten, und führten es bis 1973 weiter.
Fishers erste Frau, Mary, starb 1967. Seine zweite Frau, Illion, lernte er 1970 kennen, als sie sich als Hostess im Restaurant bewarb. Noch im selben Jahr heirateten sie. Das Paar unternahm ausgedehnte Reisen, besuchte alle Kontinente und bereiste die Vereinigten Staaten und Kanada. Vor drei Jahren zogen sie von Penngrove nach Windsor.
Fisher war fast ein Jahr lang an einem Lungenemphysem erkrankt, als er am Sonntag im Schlaf starb, sagte Illion Fisher.
Neben seiner Ehefrau hinterlässt er seine Kinder Margaret Dalrymple aus Reno und Allan Fisher aus Sonoma; seine Stiefkinder Bevy Donegan aus Florida, Sharan Davis aus Arizona und Steve Howe aus Chico; seinen Bruder Jules Fisher aus Petaluma; zwei Enkelkinder und fünf Stiefenkelkinder. Sechs Geschwister sind ihm im Tod vorausgegangen.
Freunde und Bekannte können heute ab 10 Uhr im Bestattungsinstitut Parent-Sorensen in Petaluma Abschied nehmen. Die Trauerfeier findet am Donnerstag um 11 Uhr im Bestattungsinstitut statt, anschliessend erfolgt die Beisetzung im engsten Familienkreis auf dem Cypress Hill Memorial Park in Petaluma. Spenden können an Medshares-Spectrum Hospice, 2421 Mendocino Ave., Santa Rosa, CA 95403, gerichtet werden.

Er war der Bruder von Jules Fisher aus Petaluma und wurde von sechs Geschwistern überlebt. Er hinterlässt außerdem zahlreiche Nichten und Neffen. Geboren in Nottwil, Schweiz. Alter: 89 Jahre.
Freunde und Bekannte sind herzlich eingeladen, an der Trauerfeier am Donnerstag, dem 18. Februar 1999, um 11:00 Uhr im Bestattungsinstitut Parent-Sorensen, Ecke Magnolia Ave. und Keokuk St., Petaluma, teilzunehmen. Anstelle von Blumen wird um eine Spende an Medshares-Spectrum Hospice, 2421 Mendocino Ave., Santa Rosa, CA 95403, im Gedenken an Tony Fisher gebeten. Die Aufbahrung findet am Mittwoch ab 10:00 Uhr im Bestattungsinstitut statt. Die Beisetzung im engsten Familienkreis erfolgt im Anschluss an die Trauerfeier auf dem Friedhof Cypress Hill Memorial Park in Petaluma.
